Things You Should Know About WiFi Thermostats

A WiFi thermostat gives you the tools to control your home’s temperatures from virtually anywhere in the world from your smartphone, tablet or computer. These six things may help you choose the kind you need:

  1. WiFi. In order for these thermostats to work, you have to have a wireless network in your home.
  2. Installation. Not all WiFi thermostats are as easy to install as other kinds of manual and programmable thermostats. The packaging should indicate whether it’s the kind that’s a do-it-yourself project, or if you’ll need an HVAC contractor to put it in.
  3. Motion sensors. Some WiFi units have motion sensors. Motion triggers the thermostat, and it will continue its normal programming. If there’s no movement within a prescribed period, it will revert to its energy-saving setback settings.
  4. Humidity control. Some programmable thermostats have humidity sensors that will keep the air handler’s fan running to take advantage of the still-cold evaporator coil when home humidity is excessive. Normally, once the air conditioning system reaches the thermostat’s setting, it stops, as does the dehumidification process. By running the fan longer, more air will pass over the coil, removing more humidity. This feature can reduce your energy bills in this climate because drier air always feels cooler, and there’s no lack of summertime humidity here.
  5. Zoning systems. A WiFi thermostat works well with zoning systems and lets you control energy usage in each zone. This works by having independent thermostats and dampers in each zone, which control the temperatures based on conditions and occupant preferences. Two-story and larger homes benefit from zoning systems because they reduce energy bills and increase control over comfort.
  6. Monitoring from the grid. Some WiFi units contain technology that lets power providers track energy usage remotely. This benefits the utility company during periods of peak demand because they can turn off your HVAC system to reduce risk of a blackout. Once the crisis is over, the company can turn your system back on.
